Summary
Why have citizens become increasingly polarised? One answer is that there is increasing identification with political parties – a process known as partisanship. This chapter focuses on the role that social identity and partisanship play in contemporary politics. Partisan identities influence political preferences, such that partisans are more likely to agree with policies that were endorsed by their political party, regardless of the policy content, and, in some cases, their own ideological beliefs. We will describe how partisanship mirrors other forms of social identity, both behaviourally and in the brain. However, partisanship also has distinct biological origins, and consequences in political domains such as fake news sharing, conspiracy theory beliefs, and voting behaviour. Our chapter focuses on the psychology and neuroscience of partisanship within broader sociopolitical contexts.

The aim of the social and behavioral sciences is to understand human behavior across a wide array of contexts. Our theories often make sweeping claims about human nature, assuming that our ancestors or offspring will be prone to the same biases and preferences. Yet we gloss over the fact that our research is often based in a single temporal context with a limited set of stimuli. Political and moral psychology are domains in which the context and stimuli are likely to matter a great deal (Van Bavel, Mende-Siedlecki, Brady, & Reinero, 2016). In response to Yarkoni (see BBS issue), we delve into topics related to political and moral psychology that likely depend on features of the research. These topics include understanding differences between liberals and conservatives, when people are willing to sacrifice someone to save others, the behavior of political leaders, and the dynamics of intergroup conflict.

In this commentary, we offer an additional function of rationalization. Namely, in certain social contexts, the proximal and ultimate function of beliefs and desires is social inclusion. In such contexts, rationalization often facilitates distortion of rather than approximation to truth. Understanding the role of social identity is not only timely and important, but also critical to fully understand the function(s) of rationalization.

Despite the ubiquity of tunnel channels and valleys within formerly glaciated areas, their origin remains enigmatic. Few modern analogues exist for event-related subglacial erosion. This paper presents evidence of subglacial meltwater erosion and tunnel channel formation during the November 1996 jökulhlaup, Skeiðarárjökull, Iceland. The jökulhlaup reached a peak discharge of 45 000 to 50 000 m3 s–1, with flood outbursts emanating from multiple outlets across the entire 23 km wide glacier snout. Subsequent retreat of the southeast margin of Skeiðarárjökull has revealed a tunnel channel excavated into the surrounding moraine sediment and ascending 11.5m over a distance of 160 m from a larger trough to join the apex of an ice-contact fan formed in November 1996. The tunnel channel formed via hydro-mechanical erosion of 14 000m3 to 24 000 m3 of unconsolidated glacier substrate, evidenced by copious rip-up clasts within the ice-contact fan. Flow reconstruction provides peak discharge estimates of 680±140m3 s–1. The tunnel channel orientation, oblique to local ice flow direction and within a col, suggests that local jökulhlaup routing was controlled by (a) subglacial topography and (b) the presence of a nearby proglacial lake. We describe the first modern example of tunnel channel formation and illustrate the importance of pressurized subglacial jökulhlaup flow for tunnel channel formation.

Biological electron transfers often occur between metal-containing cofactors that are separated by very large molecular distances. Employing photosensitizer-modified iron and copper proteins, we have shown that single-step electron tunneling can occur on nanosecond to microsecond timescales at distances between 15 and 20 Å. We also have shown that charge transport can occur over even longer distances by hole hopping (multistep tunneling) through intervening tyrosines and tryptophans. In this perspective, we advance the hypothesis that such hole hopping through Tyr/Trp chains could protect oxygenase, dioxygenase, and peroxidase enzymes from oxidative damage. In support of this view, by examining the structures of P450 (CYP102A) and 2OG-Fe (TauD) enzymes, we have identified candidate Tyr/Trp chains that could transfer holes from uncoupled high-potential intermediates to reductants in contact with protein surface sites.

Objective.
This study was designed to establish the rates of treatment failure for community-acquired pneumonia that are acceptable to knowledgeable and experienced physicians, in order to facilitate the interpretation of existing studies and the design of new studies aimed at optimizing the duration of antibiotic therapy. Reducing the duration of antibiotic therapy is one strategy for reducing antibiotic exposure and thereby minimizing the potential for the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
Design.Survey soliciting the acceptable failure rate for treatment given to an adult patient with uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia treated with standard-of-care therapy in the outpatient setting. Analysis was performed using a modification of established methods of contingent valuation analysis.
Participants.Six hundred eighty infectious diseases physicians in North America who were also members of the Emerging Infections Network of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Results.Three hundred seventy-five (55.1%) of 680 physicians responded to the survey. The median acceptable failure rate for treatment was 13.5%. Five hundred ten respondents (75.0%) found a failure rate of 7.3% acceptable, and 170 respondents (25.0%) found a failure rate of 19.8% acceptable.
Conclusions. This study identified the failure rates for treatment of community-acquired pneumonia that were acceptable to infectious disease physicians. This range of acceptable treatment failure rates may facilitate the design of studies aimed at optimizing the duration of antimicrobial therapy for community-acquired pneumonia.

Summary
The term midrash halachah was apparently coined in the nineteenth century. Midrash halachah, or legal interpretation, refers to specifically rabbinic forms of biblical exegesis whose ostensible purpose involves deriving broader and fuller legal conclusions from the text of the Torah. While archaeological and textual data from outside the rabbinic world shed light on important aspects of Jewish life in Palestine in the first through the third centuries, some texts raise interesting questions about the extent of rabbinic authority. Exegesis of the Bible for legal purposes was scarcely an innovation of the Rabbis of the first five Christian centuries. Beyond the texts and translations of the Bible, various religiously and culturally identifiable groups that comprised the intellectual elite of the ancient world all developed systems of exegesis of important texts. Jews and Gentiles alike considered the rabbinic reading of Scripture to represent the epitome of intellectual decadence.

The macroinfauna at depths 30–115 m was sampled in March–April 1989, c. two months after an oil spill that resulted from the grounding of the Bahia Paraiso. Stations consisted of the oil-spill site and a comparable control location, and two historical sites previously sampled in 1971. The historical sites were located at two distinct points along a known continuum of increasing physical stability with depth, attributed to disturbances from glacial calving. Macroinfaunal assemblages at most stations were characterized by very high densities and numbers of taxa. There were no significant differences (P<0.05) between the oil-spill and control sites in numbers of individuals, species, or families; nor were there any major differences in dominant fauna or overall community composition. The absence of a detectable impact on the fauna is consistent with results of hydrocarbon analyses, which showed that subtidal sediments were nearly devoid of contamination emanating from the Bahia Paraiso. The assemblage at the shallower of the two historical sites, however, showed a substantial change over the 18-yr period between studies. This change consisted of a shift toward a more species-rich and abundant macroinfauna characteristic of the more physically stable parts of the harbour. This change may be related to the fact that the glacier face near this site has retreated c. 250 m over the last 20 yrs, resulting in less physical disturbance of the adjacent seafloor.

Electron transfer processes are vital elements of energy transduction pathways in living cells. More than a half century of research has produced a remarkably detailed understanding of the factors that regulate these ‘currents of life’. We review investigations of Ru-modified proteins that have delineated the distance- and driving-force dependences of intra-protein electron-transfer rates. We also discuss electron transfer across protein–protein interfaces that has been probed both in solution and in structurally characterized crystals. It is now clear that electrons tunnel between sites in biological redox chains, and that protein structures tune thermodynamic properties and electronic coupling interactions to facilitate these reactions. Our work has produced an experimentally validated timetable for electron tunneling across specified distances in proteins. Many electron tunneling rates in cytochrome c oxidase and photosynthetic reaction centers agree well with timetable predictions, indicating that the natural reactions are highly optimized, both in terms of thermodynamics and electronic coupling. The rates of some reactions, however, significantly exceed timetable predictions; it is likely that multistep tunneling is responsible for these anomalously rapid charge transfer events.

We evaluated the effects of zidovudine postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) on the development of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) envelope-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses in 20 healthcare workers with occupational exposures to HIV. Seven healthcare workers were treated with zidovudine PER Only 1 of 7 treated, versus 6 of 13 not treated, developed an HIV envelope-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte response. These data suggest that zidovudine abrogated HIV-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses. HIV-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses may be useful as a surrogate marker of HIV replication in the evaluation of new regimens for PEP of occupational HIV exposures.

We are reducing a set of spectra covering the region from 3400 to 4330 Å that show both spatial and spectral structure in chromospheric emission lines from many elements and ions. The spectra were taken with the vacuum tower telescope at the Sacramento Peak Observatory with the spectrograph slit tangent to and touching the limb. Thus some height resolution in the chromosphere is present. Many of the lines show doubly-reversed emission, often asymmetric either for the whole line or for fine structure. The quality of the data is such as to improve our understanding of line blends. The spectral structure can be compared with the well-known structure in the H and K lines of Ca II and in the resonance lines of MgII in order to deduce a model for the lower chromosphere.
